In the heart of our living spaces, a beautiful transformation is taking place. Through careful planning and dedicated effort, the installation of stunning tiles has breathed new life into the Shannondale of Maryville lightwells. These stunning new lightwells have upscale, European aesthetic, and truly bring out the community's character.
The endeavor doesn't end here – work is in progress to introduce vibrant furniture and living plants, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that will not only rejuvenate the physical space but also foster a sense of community among residents.
By providing an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable space, we hope to encourage residents to come together, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. The addition of inviting furniture and live plants serves as an open invitation for residents to utilize these spaces for various activities – from casual conversations to collaborative projects. The goal is to create a communal atmosphere where residents can share experiences, forge new friendships, and strengthen the bonds that make a community truly vibrant.

Unveiling the Secrets to a Vibrant Later Life: Science-Backed Senior Living and Wellness News
Our aging population has brought senior living and wellness to the forefront. Thanks to medical advancements and technology, we now have a clearer picture of what fosters healthy aging. This article dives into the science behind senior living and wellness, exploring how it enhances the lives of older adults.
The Power of Movement: Why Physical Activity Matters
Physical activity is a cornerstone of senior wellness. Exercise offers a wealth of benefits, including:
Studies even suggest regular exercise reduces the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (brisk walking, swimming, cycling) or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity (jogging, hiking) per week, along with muscle-strengthening activities two days a week. At Shannondale we offer strength training, yoga, water aerobics, balance, and more daily.
Food for Thought: The Role of Nutrition
Nutrition goes hand-in-hand with senior wellness. As we age, our calorie needs decrease, but essential nutrients remain crucial for optimal health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats helps prevent chronic diseases and promotes overall well-being.
Research highlights specific nutrients that benefit older adults:
The Power of Connection: Why Social Engagement is Key
Social engagement is another pillar of senior wellness. Studies show that older adults with strong social connections and active social lives experience better mental and physical health compared to those who are socially isolated. Social interaction combats loneliness and depression, improves cognitive function, and even bolsters the immune system.
Shannondale communities provide ample opportunities for social engagement through group activities, classes, and events. These interactions foster a sense of belonging and purpose, while encouraging residents to stay active and connected with their community.
Lifelong Learning: Keeping Your Mind Sharp
Lifelong learning is another vital aspect of senior wellness. Engaging in intellectually stimulating activities like reading, puzzles, and learning new skills helps maintain cognitive function and reduces the risk of age-related cognitive decline. Learning new things also provides a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem.
At Shannondale we offer educational programs and classes specifically designed for older adults, such as art classes, computer courses, and brain games. These programs not only provide opportunities for learning and personal growth, but also create social connections and a sense of community.
The Science of a Vibrant Life
The science behind senior living and wellness underscores the importance of a holistic approach to aging. This approach emphasizes regular physical activity, a balanced diet, social engagement, and lifelong learning.
By promoting and offering these classes, Shannondale communities can significantly enhance the lives of their residents by promoting healthy aging and improving their quality of life. As our understanding of senior wellness science continues to grow, we can expect even more innovative ways to support the health and well-being of older adults in the future.

Knoxville Campus:
Jennifer Ussery, Concierge, The Lodge
Jennifer has been with Shannondale for a little over one year. During this time, Jennifer has made a very positive impact. Some of the wonderful comments we received about Jennifer are:
“Jennifer has been an exemplary employee from the time she started working here. Always on time, always hard working, and always very caring with the residents. We are very fortunate to have her here and I firmly believe she deserves this award.”
“In watching her interface with residents, she is attentive to their needs, compassionate, accommodating and always has a smile on her face. She goes that extra mile and steps up to do whatever needs to be done. She even donned a hairnet and was scooping ice cream when the Lodge was short staffed during the inclement weather. Way to go Jennifer. Jennifer is definitely an asset to the Lodge and is deserving of this recognition.”
“Jennifer has an excellent attitude and her job is hectic. She goes above and beyond to accommodate the different schedules of people and never complains about changes, etc. She is careful and accommodates people with wheel chairs, walkers, and handicapped people. Her personality is upbeat and she makes your trip a good experience.”
“I wish to nominate Jennifer Ussery, Concierge for Buckingham, The Lodge and ALC for the GEM award. She is always on the go, from transporting residents to handling all kinds of requests, delivering mail, helping visitors and pretty much whatever needs doing. She gives real meaning to the words "resident service". Thank you, Jennifer.”
“The first words that come to mind to describe Jennifer Ussery are compassion, positivity and energy. From the time she comes into The Lodge in the morning until she and Trey and Lacey leave in the evening, we can feel her presence. She has a positive word for everyone. Jennifer takes care of a myriad of tasks at the Welcome desk during the day; she also provides transportation for residents to doctor visits, "Errand Day," "Lunch Out" etc. Ask any resident--everyone knows they are safe if they are traveling with Jennifer! She sorts and puts mail in our mailboxes with amazing speed. AND then she remembers who has packages each day and makes sure we get them. Jennifer is a team-player. Any time there is a need, she steps in to help set up for activities, serve ice cream, assist with inquiries when others are away from the Welcome desk. She shifts easily from leader-to-assistant and from assistant-to-leader to keep things going smoothly during the day. We appreciate Jennifer and are so glad she is part of the Shannondale team!”
Maryville Campus:
Kathy Noble, LPN, Maryville Health Care Center
Kathy has been an LPN with Shannondale of Maryville for almost 5 years. Some of the great compliments Kathy received are as follows:
“Kathy goes above and beyond by assisting in any way she can to ensure our residents receive amazing care. She is the "fairy God-mother" ... You do not have to ask Kathy to complete a task because she is already on top of it. She is proactive in everything she does and maintains a positive attitude with a beautiful smile on her face. She is a GEM to work with.”
“Kathy is a hard working nurse, who arrives in the building ready to go to work! Kathy goes above and beyond to make sure that our residents are well cared for. Families and staff members alike feel very comfortable knowing that she is the nurse on duty. Kathy educates and assists C.N.A.’s regarding providing excellent resident care.”
Please join us in congratulating Jennifer and Kathy on their GEM Awards!
